The Kashiwado Chair was designed by Isamu Kenmochi, a designer who supported the foundation of Japanese modernism when he worked on the interior of Atami Garden Hotel in 1961.
Later, this chair was presented to commemorate Kashiwado, a famous sumo wrestler born in Yamagata Prefecture, on his promotion to yokozuna, which is where the name comes from.
At Tendo Mokko, which specializes in moulded plywood, the Kashiwado chair is unique because it is made only from solid wood. This majestic form is completed by using the rough grain of the wood called ``cutting roots'' from the root of the cedar tree, stacking them up in blocks and carving them out. The unevenness of the wood grain stands out beautifully on the surface due to the ``Uzukuri'' process.
It is a chair that is as dignified as a Yokozuna.

Tendo Mokko was established in 1940 in Tendo, which has long been known as a woodworking town famous for the Japanese chess pieces it produced. Tendo City is right in the middle of Yamagata Prefecture in the Tohoku area of Japan. Yamagata artisans have always had a mentality that combined curiosity, technique and the patience of the people of the North. In 1940, techniques to use moulded plywood were still new in Japan, and it opened up a new field of furniture making in the country. They were one of the first companies in Japan to use formed plywood to mass-produce quality furniture. Today Tendo furniture is durable and easy to use and has expanded to collaborate with top Japanese architects with top Japanese architects impossible with natural wood. When Tendo considers excellence in furniture, they imagine family assets original owners can hand down to the next generation.
