138 years of craftsmanship in Kurashiki, Okayama
Handwoven by Sunami Toru Shoten, this traditional pot stand is made from Japanese igusa rush in Kurashiki, Okayama, a region historically known for its igusa craftsmanship.
For generations, everyday household items such as baskets and pot stands were traditionally made from igusa in the home. As the industry declined with Japan’s rapid economic growth, much of this knowledge and craft gradually disappeared. Today, Sunami Tooru Shoten is the only workshop in Kurashiki continuing to make these igusa pot stands by hand.
The fifth-generation craftsman has refined techniques passed down from his grandmother, combining traditional Japanese weaving with other knotting and weaving techniques. The result is a beautifully structured pot stand with tightly woven igusa at its core, giving it a natural shape and a stable, comfortable feel in the hand.
About Igusa
Igusa, or rush, has been part of Japanese daily life for centuries. Its natural texture, subtle fragrance and beautiful colour bring warmth to the home.
The rush naturally changes in colour and develops a deeper, warmer tone with use, allowing you to enjoy the character of the material over time.
For these pot stands, Sunami Tooru Shoten uses igusa grown in Kumamoto, one of Japan’s major igusa-producing regions.

- As each piece is handmade from natural materials, slight variations in shape, size and weight may occur.
- Each piece has its own unique colour and texture.
- The igusa will gradually change to a soft, light brown colour with age and use. This natural ageing is part of its character and charm.
