Marukyu Koyamaen Trio Set

This trio set brings together three classic Japanese teas: Genmaicha (玄米茶), Hojicha (ほうじ茶) and Sencha (煎茶). Each offering a distinct flavour and character.

Genmaicha is a blend of green tea and roasted brown rice, known for its light yellow hue and gentle, nutty flavour. The toasty aroma of the rice balances the fresh, leafy notes of the tea, creating a mild and comforting cup that pairs well with rich or savoury dishes.

Hojicha is roasted at high temperatures, transforming the leaves into a warm brown colour and developing a smooth, toasty flavour with very little bitterness. It is an approachable tea with a naturally sweet aroma, making it easy to enjoy throughout the day.

Sencha is the most commonly enjoyed tea in Japan, made by steeping whole tea leaves. It has a bright, refreshing flavour with umami notes, a mild bitterness and a clean, lingering sweetness.

Together, these three teas offer a simple way to explore the range of everyday Japanese tea. A great way to explore Japanese tea, perfect for tea lovers or as a gift.

Traditional Japanese Brewing Guide

  1. Warm the tea ware: Pour boiling water into your teapot and your teacups. This warms the vessels so they don't lower the brewing temperature.
  2. Cool the water: Discard the water from the teapot into the teacups. Doing this drops the boiling water down to the ideal brewing temperature of about 75 to 80c.
  3. Add the leaves: Put your loose leaves into the warmed, empty teapot.
  4. Steep: Pour the cooled water from the cups over the leaves in the teapot. Cover and steep for the recommended time.
  5. Pour evenly: When pouring, pour a little bit into each cup at a time, going back and forth, to ensure the strength is the same in every cup. Shake out the very last drops—this is where the best flavor resides.
  6. Subsequent steepings: You can brew the same leaves 2-3 more times. For the second and third steeping, use slightly hotter water and steep for only a few seconds.
