About the exhibition

Every year we yearn for summer heat only to seek a solution to stay cool once it arrives. ‘HOT SUMMER & EDO FURIN’ will be showing at CIBI Design Store exhibition space introduces the ‘old’ tradition of Edo furin from Japan as a partner to your summer wellness, staying cool and finding your own little moment of respite.

Furin are Japanese wind bells designed to awaken our senses to the arrival of a gentle summer breeze through their refreshing sound, placed beside an open window or doorway so as to both hear and feel the summer breeze.

Edo furin are Edo style glass wind bells from Tokyo Japan, popularised during the Edo Period (1603 - 1868). Individually handblown Edo furin are characterised by their irregular opening to elicit beautiful varied high and low tones, a skill that can require 10 years of practice to master.

Crafted of three components; the sotomi, is the bell or outer shell that produces the resonance, the zetsu, is the striker inside the sotomi and finally the tanzaku, typically cloth or paper and is attached to the striker in readiness to catch the breeze.

The immersive installation of 100 Edo furin at CIBI Design store creates an orchestrate-like experience that offers coolness to both the body and mind. Showcasing the works of Shinohara Furin, a small family owned studio was founded in 1915 in Tokyo close to our CIBI Tokyo store and one of only two
remaining specializing in Edo Furin for more than 110 years. An exhibition beautifully designed for a hot Australian summer.

The exhibition opens on the 23 January, we look forward to welcoming you.
