Japanese candles often use a washi paper wick and plant-based wax, while Western candles use a cotton thread wick and mineral oil wax. The wick is made by winding dried rush straw around a layer of washi paper wrapped around a stick. These materials absorb melted wax as they burn, prevent dripping and produce a cleaner flame. After the wax has set in the mould, the stick is removed leaving a cavity through the candle that allows air to flow creating a brighter flame that is harder to be extinguished. Japanese candles are known for their bright flickering flame that adds life to the room and gives a sense of calm. The wax is made from sumac trees and is soft and easy to shape making it ideal for candle making.

These candles last about 30 minutes and can be used as a timer, tracking time without numbers while burning brightly. They have a wide rim and a narrow base so they are best used with a candle stand.
