Kayo Sansui

Yoshiaki Niguma, sole craftsperson and owner of Kayo-sansui pottery.
Each piece is hand-thrown off the hump by Master Yoshi in his intimate studio. Thrown off the hump is a technique where a large mound of clay is placed on the wheel and centred. Then each piece is formed above the hump and cut. Not only efficient, this technique minimises waste and can be very efficient yet takes tremendous skill to do properly. A CIBI family friend, Kayo-sansui is located in the township of Toyono, Okayama.

Yoshiaki-san began making pottery in 1976 and has been working with clay for nearly 50 years. He uses clay sourced from Shigaraki and Hiroshima. Sometimes he blends it with other natural materials, including tiny stones gathered from his own property.

His signature lies in his beautiful, self-developed glazes. The soft pink speckled pattern is a distinctive expression of his originality. Each piece is entirely unique, carrying its own character and individuality.

He shared how happy he is that his pieces have found a home in Australia, and we’re truly grateful to share his beautiful work at CIBI.
