What is Sarashi

Sarashi is a traditional Japanese white cloth, usually cotton, that can be used to make various garments like juban (undergarment worn under the kimono) or fundoshi (traditional undergarment) or a tenugui. Like tenugui, it can be used for wrapping gifts and personal items and as decor as we have with the CIBI ceiling.

Everyday art—versatile and practical: Sarashi and tenugui are used for many purposes, from hand towels to headwear, bandages to business cards, placemats and wall hangings. Their appeal grows with repeated use and washing, as the cloth softens and the dyes take on a well-used patina quality which we love here at CIBI. Choose it as a gift-wrapping option and we will wrap the item for you. Choose "Gift wrap options" on the item page and select "Sarashi wrapping cloth" and we'll do the rest!

Caring for your fabric

While the long sides of the fabric are finished selvages, the short ends are unfinished and will fray around 3 to 5mm. Just trim off the loose threads and the fraying will soon stop.

It is best to hand wash them in cool water without detergent. With each washing, the fabric will soften to become your own unique piece.
