The essential handcrafted tea whisk is made for use when making matcha.
Matcha whisks, known as chasen in Japanese, are handcrafted from a single piece of bamboo. Because of its association with the tea ceremony, there is an array of bamboo matcha whisks available, ranging in shape, price and value. However, the basic concept varies only subtly, and most are handcrafted from white bamboo, with 80, 100, or 120 prongs.
Fewer prongs in a matcha whisk create a heartier foam with larger bubbles and are more durable and resilient to daily use. More prongs produce finer, creamier microform and create a silkier mouthfeel and texture. However, it requires more technique to whisk evenly and to care to maintain the delicate prongs.
